FAQ's
Why DANCE?Register!
How will a student benefit from dance class?
A Student will learn movement skills, from the basics to complex, while improving co-ordination and overall fitness level. A Student can achieve a higher level of self-esteem as they take pride in accomplishing goals, learning to be comfortable in front of an audience and work to the best of their ability. Add to that the abiliity to be an artist through movement in class and on the stage.
What age should I enroll?
Students may begin at any age, but as young as 2 ½. Keep in mind, students have enrolled in their first class while in their 70’s, and really enjoy themselves!
Do boys dance?
Yes! A common misconception is that dance is only for girls. Boys enjoy the fitness and creativity involved in dance. And at Star Performance Academy we make sure that boys feel that they are involved in a “guy thing.” They have separate costuming and choreography suitable to their masculine style - and their own changeroom!
What should I expect, if I enroll my child in a recreation dance program?
Most classes for ages 2 ½ through 5 are recreation classes. These are various combination classes, combining a variety of styles.
At age 6, one-hour classes are comprised of one style of dance (a one-hour ballet class, for example). At this age and older, students who decide they wish to take recreation classes continue to take classes in any discipline(s) they choose.
Recreation students also have the exciting opportunity to perform in our Annual Recital which is performed in mid-June. Friends and family are all welcome to come and watch what they have learned all year! All group classes dance in costume, to their own class music at a professional theatre and it is a ticketed event.
Students who are eager to challenge themselves a bit more, but do not wish to compete, may be eligible for dance exams in Tap, Jazz or Ballet. Eligibility depends on years of experience and if the student has the technical ability and desire to work at passing their exam.
What should I expect, if I enroll my child in a competitive dance program?
Qualities of a member of our Dance Team include the following:
• Students must be at least 5 years of age, with confidence, passion and ability.
• They are required to have at least two consecutive years training in their desired style of dance.
• They must have permissions by the team director to participate - they may be invited, or you may participate in occasional auditions, or request an interview
How many classes does a competitive student take?
We have several levels of competition: Full Comp, Partial Comp, Primary Comp and Strictly Hip Hop. The details and requirements of these programs can be discussed at your interview.
How many competitions are there?
We compete in five competitions per year between Feruary and May.
What else is involved?
Students have individual fittings for custom-made costumes. They also learn to apply stage make-up. To help offset the costs of competing, families may wish to participate in fundraising activities. We also like to perform at community events.
The Recital
Competitive Students also perform in our Annual Recital and their own Dance Team Showcase. They will perform competitive routines as well as routines from their training classes.
