Jenelle Chappelle

Jenelle ChappelleBackstory....

I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and began competing at the age of 6. Growing up I studied ballet through the R.A.D., tap and jazz through the C.D.T.A., as well as modern, musical theatre, hip hop and lyrical from many profound choreographers in the industry.

At the age of 12, I began assistant teaching with preschool aged children. By the time I reached my senior year I was teaching my own classes, entering students in local competitions and attending conventions and workshops for professional development. This is also when I earned my scholarship in the senior ballet division with the Roland Dupree Jazz Camp USA. I was hooked! Dance had become my life and I was loving every minute of it. Over a course of time I continued teaching children from 30 months to adults in all areas of dance. I had the pleasure of judging “Outbreak”, a break dance/ hip hop competition and continued to take part in local events and conventions.

A few years after my son was born, in 2000, I made the decision to go to Malaspina University College and obtain my Early Childhood Education (being a mom and working 4 jobs was no longer an option). Coming from a family of ECE's who own and operate their own private centres, it was always a part of my life. Working in their centres was never a question, I loved it as much as I loved dance. I began working summer camps with my mom when I was 15 years old and became a permanent staff member when I was 17. ECE was in my blood, so making the decision to get my diploma was an easy one.

Shortly after graduating we were blessed with our daughter and my husband had landed a Software Engineering job here in Waterloo. So in December of 2008, our now family of four, packed up and permanently moved here from Vancouver Island, B.C.

Life in Waterloo......

In the spring of 2009 I began teaching at Star Performance Academy. Over the years I have had the opportunity to teach children of all ages, as well as adults, in a variety of dance genres. My competitive students have been recognised for their training and my choreography has won numerous special awards. Recently I have entered students for their R.A.D. ballet exams and all of them have been very successful. I too, recently completed my Intermediate ballet exam in the spring of 2016 and was awarded distinction. You can also find me in the summer at Star running some of our amazing dance camps for children of all ages!

Since 2011 I have also worked for the Waterloo Region District School board. In 2013 I obtained a Full Time Permanent contract as a Registered E.C.E. where I have been co-teaching the Full Day Kindergarten program with my awesome partner.

Combining E.C.E with my dance background has been a real benefit to the children in my care (at school and studio). I am able to share my love for music and dance while developing an age appropriate program that works within the zone of proximal development for my students. I feel like the luckiest person around when I say I am going to 'work'!
