Myra O'Seasnain

Myra O'SeasnainI started Irish dancing on a fluke. My older sisters danced at the Butler Academy of Irish Dancing with Mae and Paddy Butler, pioneers of authentic Irish dance in North America. Sometimes I sat in on the class watching my sisters and the other students dance. One day, a substitute instructor mistook me for a student and asked me to show her my reel. Too shy to tell her I was not a dancer, I jumped up and did the reel I had watched my sisters practice in class. This was followed by the jig, the slip jig and sevens. The following week, I returned to class as a real student and moved quickly through the ranks of competition to become a championship dancer under the tutelage of Mae and Paddy's daughter, June Butler.

Hard shoe was my favourite and I became well-known for strong, intricate rhythms placing 2nd in the hard shoe round at the North American Championships. Irish dancing has given me the opportunity to travel around the world, winning awards on Canadian and international stages and even representing Canada at the All-Ireland Championships in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland as one of three dancers in my age category.

I have enjoyed performing for over 25 years which, along with teaching both competitive and recreational Irish dance for over 12 years, complements my love of choreographing dances.

I am delighted to share my knowledge and creativity with the enthusiastic group of Irish dance students at Star Performance.
