Is It Too Late for My Teen to Start Dance, Music, Acting, or Cirque?

Two teens dancing a lyrical combination at Star!

Short answer: no. Teens ages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 start dance, music, acting, and cirque classes at Star Performance Academy in Waterloo, Ontario every season. Teen beginners often pick up skills quickly because they can focus longer, follow detailed instruction, and practise on their own. The right starting point depends on your teen's experience, not just their age.

Why teens make great beginners

Starting at 14 is different from starting at 4, and in a lot of ways it's easier.

  • They chose it. A teen who asks to start is usually motivated. That counts for a lot in the first few months.

  • They focus longer. Teens can take a correction, understand why it matters, and apply it in the same class.

  • They bring skills from elsewhere. Sports, gym class, school band, drama club, and even dancing to videos at home all build coordination, rhythm, and confidence they can use right away.

  • They practise on their own. This makes a big difference in music, where progress happens between lessons.

"Won't everyone else be years ahead?"

Some students at our studio have been training since they were toddlers. We place new students by age and experience, so a beginner starts with material that fits where they are now.

And being "behind" matters less than most parents expect. Researchers at University College London found that children who took part in arts activities regularly had higher self-esteem, and that the benefit came from taking part, not from being good at it (Mak & Fancourt, 2019).

What starting looks like in each program

Dance. Teen beginners learn technique from the ground up: posture, alignment, rhythm, and basic steps. Students with a sports or gymnastics background often find the strength and coordination parts come naturally.

Music. Lessons are paced to the student, so a 15-year-old starting piano, guitar, voice, or another instrument begins where they are. Teens can usually read music and build practice habits faster than younger children.

Acting. No experience needed. Teens bring real life experience to scenes, which makes acting one of the easiest programs to start later. It's also a strong fit for teens who enjoyed drama class at school and want more.

Cirque. Strength and flexibility are built gradually, with safety and progressions at every step. Teens who climb, swim, or play sports often have a head start.

Not sure which one fits? Many teens try more than one program before settling in.

What teens get out of it

Beyond the skills themselves:

  • A social group outside school. Teens meet people who share an interest, from different schools and grades.

  • Self-control and focus. A study of more than 25,000 young people in the United States found that teens who were more engaged in the arts had better self-control scores (Bone et al., 2022).

  • Something real to show. A full season of classes and a year-end performance in June is experience teens can talk about on school, volunteer, and job applications.

What about adults?

It isn't too late for adults either. Star Performance Academy offers classes for adults, and many parents start after watching their kids in class for a few seasons.

Frequently asked questions

Is 13, 14, or 15 too old to start dance? No. Teens start dance every season. They begin with classes that match their experience level.

Is 16 or 17 too old to start music lessons? No. Teens often progress quickly in music because they can practise independently and understand theory concepts sooner.

Does my teen need any experience? No. All four programs welcome beginners.

Will my teen be in a class with young kids? Students are placed by age and experience, so teens train with students close to their own age.

Can my teen take more than one program? Yes. Many students combine programs, like dance and acting or music and acting.

Can my teen join partway through the season? Yes. New students join throughout the season, which runs September to June.
