Beginner-Friendly Dance, Music, Acting & Cirque Classes in Waterloo: A Parent's Guide
If your child has never taken a dance, music, acting, or circus class before, the biggest question isn't usually "which style," it's "will they be okay walking in with zero experience?"
The short answer: yes. At Star Performance Academy in Waterloo, every program is built to welcome true beginners, no audition, no prior training, no pressure.
What age can my child start?
We group classes by age and stage, not by skill level, so no one ever feels behind on day one:
18 months to JK/SK (Preschool, ages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5): Movement, music, and imagination-based classes that build coordination and the confidence to join a group. Perfect for a first-ever class.
Grades 1 to 3 (ages 6, 7, and 8): Dance, cirque, music, and acting fundamentals, where curiosity turns into real skill.
Grades 4 to 6 (ages 9, 10, and 11): More technique and more choice, as kids start to discover what they love most.
Grades 7 to 12 (ages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17): Whether your tween or teen is brand new or a seasoned performer, there's a class built for exactly where they are.
Adults: It's never too late. Parents and young adults are welcome too.
So if you're looking for a class for a 5-year-old specifically, that typically lands in our Preschool/JK-SK or early Grades 1-3 programming, depending on your child's birthday and readiness.
Do we have to try before we register?
No. You're welcome to register directly at any time. But if you'd rather test the waters first, a free trial class is always available, no obligation, no pressure.
Will my child be behind if they've never danced, sung, acted, or done circus before?
No. Every age group starts with foundations, and instructors group by skill as well as age, so brand-new students are never lost in a room of veterans. We also run a dedicated Beginners Academy throughout the season for dance specifically.
What about circus, or "aerial circus"?
Our cirque program covers circus-arts fundamentals, things like balance, coordination, and body awareness, in a beginner-friendly, non-competitive environment. You don't need any gymnastics or dance background to start. Some studios call this "aerial circus" or "circus arts," at Star we simply call it Cirque, and it's open to first-timers just like our dance, music, and acting programs.
What's actually included?
Tuition is inclusive of the annual fixed costs families usually get surprised by later: year-end costumes, performance t-shirts, a show video, and access to in-studio events, all built in. No last-minute costume bill in the spring.
